Μια αγγλική —σκανδιναβικής, πιθανότατα, καταγωγής— μπαλάντα, που καταγράφεται πρώτη φορά στη Northumbria το 1656 ως «Ο μυλωνάς και η κόρη του βασιλιά». Όπως σε όλα τα δημώδη, υπάρχουν πολυάριθμες παραλλαγές, όχι μόνο στην Αγγλία αλλά γενικά στη Βόρεια Ευρώπη (μόνο στη Σουηδία απαντώνται 125 παραλλαγές). Μαζί με πάρα πολλές μπαλάντες των βρετανικών νησιών, το τραγούδι —σε αρκετές διαφορετικές εκδοχές του— πέρασε τον Ατλαντικό και συνέχισε τη ζωή του στον Νέο Κόσμο.

Δυο αδερφές: η μεγάλη ζηλεύει τη μικρή. Ο έρωτας είναι η αιτία. Η μεγάλη σπρώχνει τη μικρή στο ποτάμι να πνιγεί (ή στη θάλασσα, σε μερικές εκδοχές). Το ενδιαφέρον στοιχείο της μπαλάντας είναι ότι από το νεκρό σώμα της μικρής αδερφής κατασκευάζεται εν τέλει ένα μαγικό μουσικό όργανο, συνήθως άρπα ή βιολί, που παίζει μόνο ένα τραγούδι: την ίδια του την ιστορία.
