Την εντυπωσιακή ανακοίνωση έκαναν επιστήμονες στο συνέδριο της Αμερικανικής Χημικής Εταιρείας στο Ντένβερ, οι οποίοι επί οκτώ χρόνια πραγματοποίησαν δειγματοληπτικές έρευνες σε μονάδες βιολογικού καθαρισμού και έκαναν μετά ανάλυση των δειγμάτων με ηλεκτρονικά μικροσκόπια. Όπως είπαν, τα επίπεδα των πολυτίμων μετάλλων είναι συγκρίσιμα με εκείνα που ανακαλύπτονται σε ορισμένα μεταλλεία. Ενδεικτικά, ένα κιλό αποβλήτων των υπονόμων περιέχει 0,4 μιλιγκράμ χρυσού, 28 μιλιγκράμ αργύρου, 638 μιλιγκράμ χαλκού και 49 μιλιγκράμ βαναδίου.
Οι ερευνητές της Γεωλογικής Υπηρεσίας των ΗΠΑ, με επικεφαλής την Κάθλιν Σμιθ, σύμφωνα με το BBC, το Γαλλικό Πρακτορείο και το «New Scientist», ανέφεραν ότι οι υπόνομοι αποτελούν μια αναξιοποίητη μέχρι σήμερα πηγή μετάλλων όπως ο χρυσός, η πλατίνα, ο άργυρος, ο χαλκός, το παλλάδιο, το βανάδιο και άλλα σπάνια μέταλλα που χρησιμοποιούνται σε υπολογιστές, κινητά τηλέφωνα και άλλες ηλεκτρονικές συσκευές.
Όπως είπε η Κάθλιν Σμιθ, η προέλευση όλων αυτών των μετάλλων είναι οτιδήποτε καταλήγει σε έναν υπόνομο, μεταξύ των οποίων τα ανθρώπινα κόπρανα. Σύμφωνα με πρόσφατες εκτιμήσεις άλλων ερευνητών του Πανεπιστημίου της Αριζόνα, για τις ΗΠΑ τουλάχιστον, σε κάθε ένα εκατομμύριο κατοίκων αντιστοιχούν πολύτιμα μέταλλα αξίας έως 13 εκατομμυρίων δολαρίων που διατρέχουν τους υπονόμους κάθε χρόνο.
Όπως ανέφερε η επικεφαλής ερευνήτρια, «μέταλλα υπάρχουν παντού: στα προϊόντα περιποίησης των μαλλιών (σαμπουάν κ.λπ.), στα απορρυπαντικά, στα αποσμητικά, στα αντηλιακά κ.α.», ιδίως όταν αυτά περιέχουν νανοσωματίδια μετάλλων. Στο ερώτημα κατά πόσο τα ίδια τα κόπρανα περιέχουν χρυσάφι, η απάντηση των αμερικανών ερευνητών είναι ότι «δεν ξέρουμε με σιγουριά, αλλά δεν μπορούμε να το αποκλείσουμε».
Η εφαρμογή μιας μεθόδου εξαγωγής χρυσού και άλλων μετάλλων από τα απόβλητα στο μέλλον, θα βοηθούσε και στον περιορισμό της ρύπανσης του περιβάλλοντος με τοξικές χημικές ουσίες, όπως αυτές που χρησιμοποιούνται για την εξόρυξη του χρυσού από το έδαφος.
Μια μονάδα βιολογικού καθαρισμού στο Τόκιο έχει ήδη ξεκινήσει πιλοτικά την εξαγωγή χρυσού και επιβεβαίωσε ότι βγάζει ποσότητες του πολυτίμου μετάλλου που είναι ανάλογες με εκείνες ορισμένων χρυσωρυχείων.

Την εντυπωσιακή ανακοίνωση έκαναν επιστήμονες στο συνέδριο της Αμερικανικής Χημικής Εταιρείας στο Ντένβερ, οι οποίοι επί οκτώ χρόνια πραγματοποίησαν δειγματοληπτικές έρευνες σε μονάδες βιολογικού καθαρισμού και έκαναν μετά ανάλυση των δειγμάτων με ηλεκτρονικά μικροσκόπια. Όπως είπαν, τα επίπεδα των πολυτίμων μετάλλων είναι συγκρίσιμα με εκείνα που ανακαλύπτονται σε ορισμένα μεταλλεία. Ενδεικτικά, ένα κιλό αποβλήτων των υπονόμων περιέχει 0,4 μιλιγκράμ χρυσού, 28 μιλιγκράμ αργύρου, 638 μιλιγκράμ χαλκού και 49 μιλιγκράμ βαναδίου.
Οι ερευνητές της Γεωλογικής Υπηρεσίας των ΗΠΑ, με επικεφαλής την Κάθλιν Σμιθ, σύμφωνα με το BBC, το Γαλλικό Πρακτορείο και το «New Scientist», ανέφεραν ότι οι υπόνομοι αποτελούν μια αναξιοποίητη μέχρι σήμερα πηγή μετάλλων όπως ο χρυσός, η πλατίνα, ο άργυρος, ο χαλκός, το παλλάδιο, το βανάδιο και άλλα σπάνια μέταλλα που χρησιμοποιούνται σε υπολογιστές, κινητά τηλέφωνα και άλλες ηλεκτρονικές συσκευές.
Όπως είπε η Κάθλιν Σμιθ, η προέλευση όλων αυτών των μετάλλων είναι οτιδήποτε καταλήγει σε έναν υπόνομο, μεταξύ των οποίων τα ανθρώπινα κόπρανα. Σύμφωνα με πρόσφατες εκτιμήσεις άλλων ερευνητών του Πανεπιστημίου της Αριζόνα, για τις ΗΠΑ τουλάχιστον, σε κάθε ένα εκατομμύριο κατοίκων αντιστοιχούν πολύτιμα μέταλλα αξίας έως 13 εκατομμυρίων δολαρίων που διατρέχουν τους υπονόμους κάθε χρόνο.
Όπως ανέφερε η επικεφαλής ερευνήτρια, «μέταλλα υπάρχουν παντού: στα προϊόντα περιποίησης των μαλλιών (σαμπουάν κ.λπ.), στα απορρυπαντικά, στα αποσμητικά, στα αντηλιακά κ.α.», ιδίως όταν αυτά περιέχουν νανοσωματίδια μετάλλων. Στο ερώτημα κατά πόσο τα ίδια τα κόπρανα περιέχουν χρυσάφι, η απάντηση των αμερικανών ερευνητών είναι ότι «δεν ξέρουμε με σιγουριά, αλλά δεν μπορούμε να το αποκλείσουμε».
Η εφαρμογή μιας μεθόδου εξαγωγής χρυσού και άλλων μετάλλων από τα απόβλητα στο μέλλον, θα βοηθούσε και στον περιορισμό της ρύπανσης του περιβάλλοντος με τοξικές χημικές ουσίες, όπως αυτές που χρησιμοποιούνται για την εξόρυξη του χρυσού από το έδαφος.
Μια μονάδα βιολογικού καθαρισμού στο Τόκιο έχει ήδη ξεκινήσει πιλοτικά την εξαγωγή χρυσού και επιβεβαίωσε ότι βγάζει ποσότητες του πολυτίμου μετάλλου που είναι ανάλογες με εκείνες ορισμένων χρυσωρυχείων.
